"In a working class rail town, Rick was born
From the first time he played, his dream was formed
His life would be in music
All his thoughts, all his drive
He soon became known for his sense of time.
But it wasn't always easy
No, it wasn't always fun
He had to quit school to help out his mom (POOR BOY)
He was a starving musician, in the truest of ways
He'd go a few miles DOWNSTREAM till he came to BETTER DAYS.
And then he finally caught a break
From a man known as Sam
And though he was a bit of a flake
He was a man with a plan
From town to town and gig to gig
Fully believing he'd make it big
From the highs to the lows
And all points IN BETWEEN.
But when the cupboard ran bare, Rick put out an ad (Genuine Opportunity)
For he was on a train to nowhere; it'd never seemed so bad...
That's where Roger comes in, his partner in crime
And boy he just made it in the nick of time.
From a sheltered existence with historical past
From private school where he felt an outcast
But after SCHOOL was over, music began
And boy let me tell you---he had melody man.
Not wanting to HIDE IN HIS SHELL, Roger figured what the hell
So, being a DREAMER he answered the ad
And as he remembers, the place was quite mad.
But something clicked between Roger and Rick
The creative energy was flowing so quick
When they started writing the result was frightening.
The first two recordings were not very rewarding
So they changed personnel and soon you could tell
And boy did they gel.
The sound was pristine
So loud, yet so clean
Their contrasting styles seemed to blend so well, one thing for sur, they could play BLOODY WELL................................................
RIGHT...right, their music was so tight
Let's have another listen tonight
Right, right, their sound was out of sight
Think I'll have another listen tonight
So thanks for the music
And thanks for the words
The likes of yours I've never heard..."
So now you are FREE AS A BIRD...FROM NOW ON...FOREVER...INDELIBLY STAMPED...GOODBYE STRANGER!
ps: this is just a lyric I wrote back in early 2000's after seeing Supertramp in concert...always my favourite band, and Rick was my favourite musician/writer. 50+ years of their music and I never get tired of it...what a legacy.
