Many thanks Gary for posting that.

We drove Jasper to Banff to Calgary way back in 2004, after taking the Rockie Mountaineer Train from Vancouver to Jasper.

Over riding thought, wow what a lot of trees.

Simply stunning Country and people to match.

I've made the trip across country from coast to coast a few times.

By train is best.

And YES!!! A Helluva lot of trees, :D :D :D

Whenever we have guests from Europe they are all pumped to wander out into the bush. :D

Unlike Britain, however, we still have creatures in our forests that would love to make a meal out of you.

The coyotes have been migrating eastward for decades now and there have been reports of a pack seen in my neighbourhood.

Canada is a beautiful place, and they keep it that way. Gary, I am surprised to hear that coyotes have made it that far East. Several years ago we verified that they have reached mid- South Carolina. Now I can't let my little dog out alone any more.

I'm near the lakeshore in Mississauga.

Southern Ontario was designed to have a lot of green belts interspersed among the housing and high rises.

It's a beautiful place to go for a walk, but at night I wouldn't dare venture into the shadows alone.

One of my neighbours was walking his dog a few hundred yards from the building and all of a sudden he spotted 3 coyotes stalking him from behind. He slowly made his way back to the safety of the building but those suckers are mean strong but they are shy cowards at heart. My best approach is to make yourself as big and noisy as possible and hopefully if they aren't starving they will back off in search of easier prey.

There's at least 30 dogs in my building and people are walking them multiple times every day. So far I haven't heard of a direct attack but I'm certain it's only a matter of time.

And here in Canada they've now been spotted as far East as New Brunswick.

Mississauga has them for at least 25 years now since I've been here.

A friend of mine went walkabout in the Rockies.

He had a very mean encounter with a Ranger who gave him a ballocking and escorted him off the mountain for being ill prepared.

My Cousin had a closer encounter, he was wild camping whilst climbing with some friends when his tent was trampled and he was mauled a bit. His party was prepared and all the food was suspended from a tree the visitor snacked on the food and left.

Nearest to sort of wildlife I got was about 50 foot from this bear on Grouse Mountain near Vancouver. All there was separating us was a flimsy electric fence but all the bear wanted to do was to have a soak, after five minutes he ambled away.

Canadian squirrels are multicultural :D

Red ones are indigenous to the western side of the country, while grey and brown ones dominate the east, while in southern Ontario a mutation has created a very thriving black squirrel population.

Some say the black squirrels are more intelligent and have already begun to spread to Montreal in the past few years.

And be thankful there was an electric fence between you and the bear.

People out hiking and camping in the bush usually don't have that luxury and end up as a brown/black/grizzly/polar/kodiak bear lunch every year.

Bear spray might help, if you ever hear him coming up behind you in time.

First thing they teach you is to make a lot of noise when you enter an area to scare them away, and if you ever encounter a mother and cub, Maintain eye contact and reverse away slooowly.

I still think we're better off than Australia where seemingly EVERYTHING wants to kill you. :D :D :D

Grouse Mountain Reserve.

We backed away when this rescued fellow got a bit close to us, the fence was not reassuring at all.
