What's the best approach to getting a good slide guitar sound.

Maybe simply get a slide guitar VI? I've always heard good things about Orange Tree guitars.

A MIDI ribbon controller will be c$250.

I think it's safe to day he's talking about the quality of the sound, not the notes being played.

An instrument is not just sound. It's all about articulation, phrasing, dynamics, and the whole approach that makes the instrument what it is. The OP should be more specific.

How an instrument is played is what (largely) makes the performance what it is; it has nothing to do with the instrument being what it is. But I agree he could have been a little more specific.
