Small finger pain

Lately I sometimes feel a small pain in my fingers (well my pinky that is) when I'm pressing an octave (egg C3 and C4) with some dynamics.
I didn't use to get this and I just stop playing octaves when this happens.

What do you think causes this and what is my best course of action?

ps. I'm playing dynamics with my hands and not with finger strength (sorry Jordan :p), but this should cause less problems with injuries, or so I've heard.

...:confused::confused: could you possibly reword that?

Regardless, when playing any instrument really, if you start feeling any pain or stress it's best to stop playing and relax. By practising you'll build up strength.

I'm assuming you mean your wrist is doing the work as opposed to your fingers.

Try to isolate were exactly the pain is coming from - I'm guessing it's from the actual pressure rather than the stretch. If this is the case, tone down the amount of work you do with that finger, but don't stop using it all together, or it'll lose strength. If pain persists, see a doctor.

That's what I meant, my wrist is doing the work.
And yes, it comes from the actual pressure

the most common problem with piano playing and pain is the hand position.

There is a very high chance you hold your hands wrong. Fist of all
both hands must be in a position as if you were holding a small ball in your hand.

Like a tennis ball for example. Do NOT lower your wrist under the line of your fingers
or (even worst) under the keys. I've seen a lot of people do that and that's why they
can't play some pieces and that's why they get cramps or pains in their fingers or hands.

One more other thing goes for your thumb. Do not let it stick out. If not playing
with your thumb - It has to be loose
and next to your other fingers like the natural position.

take a look at the link above :)

Update: LOL, i just noticed the guy says the same thing on the video :D
