Hi, I just purchased a used Roland RS-50. Now I wonder if I need a sustain pedal to get the ambient pad sounds that just keep going on forever... or can I get that sustain by tweaking the effects? (I haven't learned how to use the effects yet.)

I'm wondering if the sustain & echo pedals are mainly used for piano, just like when I was a kid & all they had were acoustic pianos.

A pedal is definitely the best way to go if you want to switch it on/off on the fly.

I bought an entry level keyboard and managed to haggle the guy into giving me the sustain pedal! They are pretty cheap if you get a basic one.
