Hello all,
I just got a second hand Yamaha S80, that looks to play well, but I found that the bottom panel is wood.
Is this normal? I thought professional keyboards had some kind of metal cover in the bottom.

I send pictures of the keyboard in attach.

Thank in advance for your feedback!

Be thankful it's solid wood.

My Roland juno DS88 has some sort of particle board or MDF for the base of the keybed.

I imagine it will never warp but impact resistance must be close to zero.

It also adds a ton of weight to the board.

A lot of manufacturers these days go with custom injected moldings for the base that's actually stronger and more warp resistant then steel.

Welcome.

Given that the S80 is quite an old board the base looks to be holding up very well.

As with any particleboard just keep liquid away from it and it will last for many more years.

Welcome to the forums. I also have an S80 that I use for a "practice room" board when I can leave it set-up. You pictures show that the underside has a factory stock bottom, the same as mine. In fact, I got a great deal on my S80 because my bottom has a hole in the board. I just put a piece of gaffer tape on it. I've had it about 20 years. It is a good board, but it's heavy.
