Yamaha YC73- losing volume with higher keys

hello,

I've had a Yamaha YC73 for about 4 years. I really like the keyboard. When I play in some groups, I use my 2 QSC K8 speakers as monitors. Recently, I've noticed that the volume is significantly lower in the top octave of the keyboard than in the middle of the keyboard. I don't remember this being the case 2 or 3 years ago. I recently played without my speakers, just using the venue's mains and the band's monitors....same thing. I play with one group where I use headphones as monitors. I haven't noticed volume dropping off in the higher register using headphones. Anyone have an idea as to what might be causing this and how to remedy it?

Thanks!

My kurz has a parameter called keyboard tracking. It balances the sound across the keybed with C4 being the pivot point. An increase in keyboard tracking causes the notes to get louder above C4 and the notes below C4 to get quieter. A decrease in keyboard tracking does the opposite. It is done within a program, i.e. it's not global. I dont know if the yc series has this feature perhaps as a global parameter and somehow you fiddled with it unintentionally.

If it happens with speakers but not headphones, it could be speaker placement. Higher frequencies drop off more quickly as you move off-axis. Try making sure the monitor is aimed right toward your ears and see if that makes a difference.

Hi,

does this apparent volume drop happen from a specific key location onwards or is it variable locations along the higher register keys?

The drop off in volume is mild and gradual from about C4 (middle C) to about E6, but then pronounced from E6 up to my top key, which is E7 (73 keys). So, C6 is a bit softer than C4, but C7 is a lot softer than C6.

Right,

have you got the Master EQ engaged that could cause your issue - or alternatively could you engage the Master EQ to “fix” your higher frequency volume loss issue?

Also: any chance you're using L ,R mono to 2 speakers separately, but only using the sound of 1?
If you use L/Mono out of the 1/4" TS jack, then it's supposed include both the left & right output into the 1 output (monaural out), but if you use the XLR. you're only getting the left (the stereo image is panned from low keys on the left to higher notes on the right, as you can clearly hear with headphones. You'll get quite a noticeable dropoff from the left output after around C4, yes, and then almost nothing from the right hand side going to the left for the top 1.5 Octaves or so.

If you are plugging in L and R into the mixer, I'd check that you haven't done a mono sound source on your mixer, because again, that will ignore the right hand input (which means you'll get less and less sound from about the midpoint going up).

Same thing happens with drum toms when not output properly into stereo. Mind you it's also possible one of your cables is starting to go (easy enough to check just by swapping the cables on the output of your YC)

See if any of those issues might be it?

Mark
