More than 100 musical students from the county participated in the Collin County Young Artist Competition in January and the hard work of the three competition winners will soon pay off.On March 27, grand prize winners Derek Hawkes, Russell Houston and Charles Jin will be featured in the Plano Symphony Orchestra’s annual concert highlighting the competition’s winners, Cirque de la Symphonie and the Young Artists.
Hawkes, Houston and Jin each beat out the competition in the winds, strings and piano categories, respectively, to win the rare chance to perform alongside PSO as the featured soloists.Hawkes, a trombone player, will be featured in Grondahl’s Concert pour Trombone et Orchestre, 1st movement; Houston, a cellist, will perform in Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B Minor, 1st movement; and Jin’s piano talents will be featured in Rachmaninov’s Piano Concert No. 1 in F-sharp minor, 1st movement.
