Hi everyone! I've got my first keyboard about a year ago. I've recently joined a classic rock band. The rest of them have been playing together for years and have lots of experience. I have SO much to learn. I've picked up several songs but am finding it hard to pick others up. I have no musical background, other than listening and singing along to the radio :) So I'm hoping to pick up tips/information to help me improve.

Practice, practice, practice.

Pick up a few method and theory books. You start with Itsy Bitsy Spider, work your way up to the Brandenburg Concertos, then get a job playing Itsy Bitsy Spider :D

And definitely consider signing up for some lessons. You'll soon enough find out if you have the desire to continue or not.

And learn to eat, sleep and fart with a keyboard near you at all times, just to help develop your ear.

I have one of these I keep with me at all times just for poking around and picking up melodies and ear training.

Even though it sells as a toy, it is a valid keyboard instrument and it will make you a better player if you keep it by your side at all times.

If you're dedicated to learning music, it will pay off in time. You just need determination and patience.

Practice indeed. I've been playing keyboards for fifty-eight years, and while I could probably gig if I wanted to, I wouldn't be good at it for a while. I played drums in a rock band back in the 70's, and did a LOT of gigging (and a tour or two). We practiced five hours a night, seven days a week, for six months before we started playing for 'real' audiences - and we started out as 'experienced' musicians. It's work. But it's a labor of love.

If you don't love it you'll never get there. If you do, you will get there with enough work.

Keep the passion, and just let it flow from deep inside.

There isn't a better feeling than having the crowd behind you when you're up there on the stage. It transcends anything I've ever done.
