My take on Lose Control; I'd lost my voice in Feb of 2024, and it never fully came back, but at least my voice was no longer a whisper by the end of 2024. So, just me getting back on that horse.

The song was a fairly simple 6-8 soul ballad; but with a *lot* of lyrics. Took me longer to learn the lyrics than it did to program the beat and learn the song!

No probs with the playing, but the vocals? Reminds me of Johnny Mathis doing a torch song. Not really my cup of tea.

Blues songs are meant to be rasped and shrieked. Not methodically and melodically with sappy sweet tonality.

But what do I know? I have the romantic sensibilities of a potato :D :D :D

Gary, I agree, actually, this is the take my wife approved, so that's the one (she said I sounded too raspy on some of the other takes). But my live take from our 2025 concert, well, I had a larger room, so I could bellow. But also, I lost my voice in 2024 (Feb 19th, I remember because I'd never lost my voice before) and it didn't really start coming back until this February; when I filmed this take, my voice felt like about 40-45%. That's the new normal for me :1

Yes I realize I have this concert take premiering in 6 weeks, it's not public yet.
I didn't want to upload all the videos from the concert at once, so I spaced them out :p My voice felt like about 75% at this point (it fluctuates every few minutes. It sucks not having full access to my own voice anymore, but it happens; Aerosmith canceller their final tour because of Steven Tyler's damaged larynx (also see Bon Jovi in the last few years). So even partially coming back, it's better than nothing. Iit popped up to about 90% during "Show Must Go On" fortunately; but that's about as good as it gets from me.

I only sang 2 songs at our 2025 concert (I sang 7 at the 2020 one for Genos and PSRsx900) because my voice is so relatively unstable compared to before. (Certain notes just don't make a sound. Like when you have laryngitis)

It is what it is, and I'm hoping it keeps coming back (best the doctors could figure was that I lost my voice due to insanely high blood pressure (175/110!), despite removing excess salt from my diet, and drinking 2-3 litres of water per day starting a dozen years ago, which lowered my bp back then? As my Dr put it: I'm simply getting old. And overweight.

So I've been on bp pills and jogging about 12.5k (6.25 on each of my days off) every week for over a year now.

I'm still fat, though, but the bp has gradually come down, and as the bp comes down, my voice comes back bit by bit!
Fingers crossed...

I fully agree Mark,

Take a break from the singing for a while, rest your voicebox and adjust your style to simple ballads that don't require Jim Morrison style vocals. Lot's of warm tea with honey.

Your voice works better with stuff like Bing Crosby or Perry Como, the lounge lizard stuff.

I forgot to mention the craziest part; my Dr's (family Dr sent me to see a neurologist as well), losing my voice was the 'least of my worries'; I'd also lost all temperature sensation on the right hand half of my body. (It's still not all there, so I have to keep touching things with my left hand to see how hot or cold they are, but *some* temperature sensation has returned, so I can at least tell if something is cold or not on the right, but I can't tell *how* cold. It's really bizarre. That's why I only uploaded instrumental vids in 2024!

Thank goodness for our healthcare system!

True dat. In the You Ess Eh the insurance would drop your policy as soon as it came up for renewal. :p

Have they scheduled a cerebral MRI for you yet? Sounds to me like you suffered a mild stroke. Especially when you mentioned the hypertension and the sudden onset of symptoms.

Yeah, already did MRI (free, btw, cause Canada, eh) Both my Dr and my neurologist both hadn't seen anything like this; but since my dad died from a simultaneous stroke & brain hemorrhage (@ younger than I am now), my family Doc figures I had a mild stroke, yeah.
But it was confusing for them because I didn't lose tactile sensation on the RHS; I could *feel* everything except temperature. Hence why losing my voice for the first time ever wasn't the main concern for them (for me, though...!)

Misdiagnoses are the reason doctors call it a "practice" and not usually a "science."

Really with all the soft sciences involving the human element the exception tends to actually BE the rule.

Like the boy scouts, expect the unexpected and "be prepared" for anything life throws at you chum. Continue your recovery with lots of good quality protein and assorted nutrients in balanced amounts along with low fat content, and I'm not sure about your diabetes status, but sugar is also an essential element for the function and maintenance cerebral tissue.

Thank whatever fates you can for the absence of physical symptoms but remember that your body is a machine which requires certain essential inputs to operate trouble free.

And thank your lucky stars that music therapy is already a big part of your life.

Physio includes every muscle in the body including the vocal chords. If you need more info on how to approach rehabilitation ask your doctor to schedule an appointment with a speech therapist/vocal coach. They could advise you on appropriate treatments and remedies to participate in your own recovery. If your GP won't do it, try visiting the medical faculty at UBC to get your answers,.

This is my best answer to your dilemma my friend. And keep on rockin'. :)

All things tend to come in waves.
It is hard to see over the other side of a huge wave. It could be calm waters.

I think Mark, a huge wave has come crashing down on you.
The thing is you are not a weak minded or weak willed. You have proven that to us. You have the strength to swim through these rough waters.

You have got talent and desire and optimism. These are some of your strengths. You can use these to power on through mate.

Hoverer, Sorry No guarantee there won't be another wave on the other side however one at a time and . .
what he said . .
And keep on rockin'. :)
Best wishes Mark

Thank you both for your well wishes! We can only be preventative, my dad's passing taught me there's no real guarantees in life.

My Doc said I'm getting old & overweight, so in addition to blood pressure pills, I've been jogging approx 6.25km every day off (so 12.5km a week; been doing this for just over a year now!) I'm *very* slow, it takes me just over an hour (my wife can jog the same distance in 41 min!!)o_O
