Weighted Action KB for my HS son?

I play some (obviously) bass and drums. Now my younger son, who never showed much interest in bass or drums in grade school, seems to think he wants to try piano. Well hey, not like I am going to go get a heavy piano when I can get a used, lighter weigh keyboard. Obviously weighted action.

So gang, I am clueless.

What should I be looking for in a useed, 88 key weighted action keyboard?

There's an M-Audio Oxygen 88 near me for $425 on CL, and that seems cheap enough, but better I ask the guys in the know.

So ideas? And how much will they cost used?

Referrals to classifieds here are fine too.

Thanks!

PS. Ideas for a DVD course to learn from welcome too!

M-Audio Oxygen keyboard action is total crap. I own an Oxygen 49 so I know whereof I speak. Also it's a voiceless MIDI controller so it won't produce any sound unless it's hooked up to a computer running a VSTi plugin (Google it)

Voiceless MIDI controllers are not a bad idea for a beginner. With a properly quick CPU with enough RAM you can produce some fantastic voices. VSTis like Pianoteq give a $5000 Korg Kronos a run for its money.

But a good 88 key controller will run you between $600 and $1000 new.

One really good controller out there these days is the Arturia Keylab 88 which comes bundled with a massive collection of really good VSTis. It sells for about $1000 new.

Anyway, avoid anything by M-Audio.

Controllers I WOULD consider owning: The Arturia, Akai, Novation, Korg, Roland or Studiologic.

Bear in mind you still need to buy the VSTis or use some pretty crappy freeware ones and your hardware needs to be fast enough and powerful enough to use them effectively without jitter or latency.

OR

Consider a used Yamaha or Casio low end CDP or CP or PX home electronic piano.

Some models sell under $600 new. Some older ones can be had used on craigslist or ebay for about 60% of that price.

Just bear in mind when you buy a used instrument, bring along someone who knows how to play.

Check if every single key, switch, knob and button works as intended.

Check if it's been sitting under a dust cover or if it's been left out in the open air and played with greasy fingers and a ham sandwich in one hand.

Check the original bill of sale to make sure nobody's pulling your leg about how much they paid or when they bought it.

Don't buy an electronic instrument older than 7 years old unless you want to start shelling out for big repairs in a year or two.

Ideally you want to buy something that daddy shelled out $800 for his pride and joy, who plunked at it for two weeks, then gave up and it ended up gathering dust for the next two years until they got disgusted and listed it in the classifieds.

Those should be enough tips to get you started.

If in doubt about used prices here's a link to a site that gives the value of used keyboards.

Hope this helps.

I'm going to bed. If ya have any other questions I'll try and answer them tomorrow.

Thanks Gary!

Years ago we had an Ensoniq KS-32 weighted action keyboard when my wife wanted to learn to play (and later stopped). We sold it. Boy I wish we still had it. Great action and all the sounds were in that unit. No plug in's, no nothing but a kb amp needed. I actually had it hooked up to an old Sansui high end audio amp and a nice set of bookshelf speakers. Sounded great.

SO... Anything kinda like that worth looking at used with a number of sounds in it?

Have a look at a Roland RD64
It is a 64 note electronic piano with an authentic feeling piano action
A beginner will not miss the bottom or top octave, and being shorter than a full length piano it is easy to move, carry and store
The on board sounds are excellent
It can used with headphones so his practice can be noiseless to the rest of the household
There are plenty of reviews on youtube

There's some good used pro gear floating around on eBay and Craigslist if you keep looking. New listings come up every day.

In the $400 to $600 range you might pick up a good used 76 or 88 key stage piano.

Suggestions include the Kurzweil SP4-7 and SP4-8, the Korg SP-100 and the Casio PX-3.

They all require an external amp and speakers, but you can get decent results with any good quality home stereo system or even a good set of 2.1 computer speakers and the right cable adapters.

They're all line level and compatible so no problems there.

Keyboard amps are OK, Bass Amps will do in a pinch, and PA systems are all OK.

Just don't use a guitar amp with a keyboard. The frequency response and dynamic range and input impedance are all wrong with those.

Good luck and happy hunting. ;)

Sorry for my late reply here but thank you all! My son returns home in just a few days, so hopefully we can find him something.

No problem with the delay. The business of life gets in the way of art all the time.

By all means let us know what you got once you've found something suitable.
