Reproducing MIDI instrument, where to ask advice?

Hello!

The problem is a general one: found a marvelous instrument in a song, would like to make a similar one.

I am completely new to creating instruments myself on the keyboard or in a software, where could I ask for advice? I searched several forums but didn't really found a place that dealt with instrument reproduction, however I am sure many people would be interested in it.

I have been doing audio editing and have basic knowledge on effects, etc, so I am not a total beginner, but some guidance to know which direction to go would be useful.
