I just purchased a used Yamaha TYROS3 keyboard

What is the purpose of the 8 pin cable that connects the keyboard to the TRS-MS04 woofer?

It seems like some sort of control cable

Yamahas TRS (Tyros) and the later GNS (Genos) sub bass speakers have always connected with these rather fiddly cables.

Your satellite speakers will not work unless the sub bass cable is plugged in and the sub speaker is switched on, because it has it's own amp which controls and balances all the Tyros sound input.

The actual Tyros Keyboard doesn't contain any amp at all, so you must either use speakers containing an amp which provides a passive feed to the satellite speakers, OR if you use anything other than the self powered speakers then you would have to use an amplifier. (with yet more cables).

Tyros models are all good and I hope you enjoy playing yours.

Thank you for the detailed explanation Bouncingogre. I appreciate it

It seems like a rather convoluted speaker configuration

The "satellite speakers" do not appear to have their own power amplifier and apparently get the audio direct from the keyboard or are you saying the amplifier in the sub bass speaker actually provides an amplified feed to the satellite speakers, wired through the keyboard?

Yes, exactly that.
The ONLY amp is in the Sub Bass speaker.
There are NO amps inside the keyboard itself.

It's how it is. Hence the 8 pin configuration. Power is delivered to the satellite speakers through the dedicated sockets on the L and R ends of the keyboard.

Of course, there's nothing to stop you hooking up other speakers as needed through the audio out Jack's.

Consult your manual for this.
