Hey everyone. I'm a huge U2 fan. And The Edge of U2 apparently plays the Yamaha CP-70 on stage.

Yamaha refers the CP-70 to an "electric grand piano". It's definitely not a synthesizer.

However, it seems like the term "keyboard" is thrown around liberally by contemporary recording artists.

So here's my question-

Is the Yamaha CP-70 an actual piano, or is it a keyboard?

There's nothing electronic or digital about the Yamaha CP-70, right?

The CP70 does have an electronic preamp on board. It has piano strings with pickups (similar principal to an electric guitar).
The term "keyboard" is a broad term for a type of instrument, as there are many types of keyboards.
Think of how we use the term "car" to describe personal transportation.

So the CP70 can be considered BOTH a piano and keyboard. However, the CP70 is essentially a piano.

Is that right?

Yes, the CP70 is a piano. The term keyboard came into use with the advent of electronic instruments which could not be generically called a "piano", "organ" etc. It's kind of a generic description of an electronic instrument that is played with keys.
