Roland D20 - cannot start preset rhythms !!

Hi ! I just recovered my good old Roland D20 from its storage box and plugged it. All seems to work fine except that I cannot get the start button to work... For example, I go to the rhythm machine, selec a preset pattern and click on start. The start button lights up but remains still (doesnt blink). and nothering happens ! Same issue when trying to use the sequencer, Am I doing something wrong (last time I used it was in the early 90s!), or is there a problem with something electronic...? Any advice would be greatly appreciated !!
