Used the Vortex live last night. It worked well. I got about 40 feet away from the stage and it still worked perfect.
I set up a laptop and ran the included soft synth - Sonivox DVI Vortex, which is, well, to me it's totally lame. But now I feel confident about the controllers playability and I'm willing to get an iConnect MIDI4+ and a midi module of some kind. I'm not going to use a laptop - the Alesis wireless dongle can plug directly into the MIDI4+, then midi out to the sound module.
