They're not as wildly odd as most of these posts—but I love the Timbre (Russian) Accordion Group, who play unique accordion-like instruments designed to mimic instruments of the orchestra (clarinet, French horn, bass, I forget what else):

And here's my all-time favourite solo looping performance (which follows a short comic intro):

OMIGAWD!!

Like, MIDI guitars have come a long way...

Damn I wish I could bend my left wrist that way. :p

Maybe I could mount it on a stand and play it like a steel guitar?

That's crazy! I've never paid attention to them in years. I get what you're saying! I used to paly with a guy who had a midi pickup on his guitar. Between the 2 of us, we could cover the horn sections of Chicago and Lighthouse.

Time to dust off the cobwebs on this thread with the question: Why does nobody produce these commercially?

I can believe that they make a melodica with an electric pickup, but a genuine MIDI melodica controller?

My searches bring up some pretty limited results.

Either DIY stuff or regular melodicas ranging from $20 to a Hammond uber melodica retailing for a whopping $899

Even a basic electric pickup seems rare.

Maybe we should drop someone like M-Audio a line ;)

They'd be easy enough to make but the demand isn't there.

If the pro bands aren't using them then the kids don't want them.

They do make MIDI wind instruments.
