Long story short, I am forming an 80s cover band in Maine and apparently there are not many keys players up here, lol. So I am considering covering the position, at least part time. We are doing the standard 80s repertoire, heavy on the New Wave - Cars, Devo, Wang Chung, Oingo Bongo, B52s, etc. I am looking for the an economical yet encompassing solution to this issue. I have done some research, but not found anything yet. I am surprised that no one makes an easy solution like an 80s soft synth pack...

Anyways... What are your thoughts? Controller + Laptop / Soft Synth? If so, what program and what libraries? An actual keyboard? If so, which model? Something else? And how much is this going to hurt my wallet?

Thanks in advance!

A Korg Kross or Korg Krome may cover all the basics you need for 80's new wave stuff. The Kross is surprisingly affordable.
